Weekly News & Fishing Report

11th March 2010

Massive rains and some winter like weather over the past week has slowed the fishing a bit, but with lots of nutrients being put into the bays and some good water being put into the rivers, the fishing throughout Autumn should be awesome.

Port Phillip Bay

Mordialloc Pier has seen good numbers of pinkies being caught in the rough weather this week. Many of the fish are in the 25-30cm range. Staff member Eren fished the pier on Tuesday afternoon and had great success catching a bunch of pinkies. He said that by far the best bait was salted stripey fillet.

Customer Steve Church reports that good numbers of whiting are back on the chew in Beaumaris Bay with locations such as Brickies and the Parkdale Pinnacles producing the goods.

Along with the whiting Kingfish reports are still filtering through with scattered fish being taken on live baits of squid and garfish or small trolled lures. One angler who’s name we didn’t get caught a kingfish of about 2kg on a pippie while whiting fishing.

The Patterson River mouth is fishing well for small salmon after all of the rain we have had over the weekend.  Good mate and customer Darren Jansen fished with his son Kai and daughter Katja on Sunday and had a ball trolling small metal slugs and hard bodies.

Squid are still on the chew with big numbers being taken between Olivers Hill and Mt Martha. Good mate and full time fisherman Glen fished on the squid off Olivers Hill and had a session with his mates Jason and Jason,. The boys said the numbers of squid were out of control with the boys catching their bag limit as well as releasing so many that they lost count. Glen said the dynamite jigs by far were the 2.5 Harimitsu EWC and the Yamashita TGK.

Customers Jim and Paul have been whacking the squid while fishing land based down off Mt Martha with several good catches over the past 10 days or so. The boys have also had several squid up to 2kg in weight.

On the Snapper front we have started to hear some good reports of quality fish being taken in the bay with several anglers catching big numbers of 4-8kg snapper off Werribee and Pt Cook.

Matt Cini of Reel Time Charters also reported some good snapper catches over on the other side of the bay with numbers of fish to 6kg.

Westernport

Matt Cini and Matt Boulton of Reel Time Charters have struggled through some awful winter like weather over the past week to produce continued numbers of whiting, with the boys both reporting that they are seeing more quality fish in the 40+cm size.

Matt Boulton also had one lucky customer by the name of Colin Sires manage to land a cracking 50cm whiting while on charter. The boys also said there success is definitely due to their system, which consists of the berley cage on the bottom filled with crushed pilchards and a few pellets and baits of pippie and mussel baited on size 6î circle hooks and a paternoster rig.

With the fishing being so good now is a top time to get out on charter with the boys to get a great feed of whiting and also pick up some great tips on catching them. To book a charter contact Mel @ Reel Time Fishing 0438 302 093 www.reeltimefishing.com.au

Some good reports of squid are starting to filter through from the Flinders to Balnarring area with anglers finding some solid squid following up there whiting while fishing the area.

Out Of Town

Portland

Last Friday Lee and the Adventure Bound Crew headed down there to do some filming with Scott Gray and as much as it killed Lee not to be heading a million miles offshore in search of tuna, instead they stayed in close to shore in search of kingfish.

The end result was 5 rats kings between 2-4kg and a cracker of a king that Scott landed on a Popper, Lee also managed an 8lb salmon on a surface stick bait.

Later in the Afternoon the boys also caught up with Matt Hunt who was out having a social fish with his mates Simon Rinaldi and Daniel. The boys were fishing up the coast off Narrawong where they caught a lovely whiting that was just under a kilo in weight, they also had a School shark of over 20kg along with losing 3 others.

On Saturday there were several albacore brought into Portland along with the odd Bluefin for anglers who stayed out late for the afternoon bite period. Matt Hunt of Matt Hunt Fishing Services landed one tuna of 28kg as well as an albacore. To book a charter with Matt call him on 0409 008 441 or go to www.fishingservices.com.au
